If our children end up marrying non-Jews, we should not reject them. We should continue to give our love and by that retain a measure of influence in their lives, Jewishly and otherwise. Life consists of constant growth and our adult children may yet reach a stage when Judaism has new meaning for them. This seems striking evidence that the intermarriage rate in the large metropolitan areas is lower than it is in the smaller communities; by exactly how much, we cannot of course say.

In a study recently completed by the writer at Columbia University, two such indicators were chosen in order to determine whether Jews from metropolitan areas were more or less likely to intermarry than Jews from smaller communities. The indicators used in this study, the results of which are being published for the first time in this article, were the amount of inter-dating between Jews and non-Jews, and the frequency of “going steady” between Jews and non-Jews. It would seem reasonable to assume that the more inter-dating and the more “going steady” relationships we discover between Jews and non-Jews, the more intermarriage there will be. This study of Jewish youth raises one last problem. It is the problem of being led to the waters but forbidden to drink. We have encouraged the cultural and social contacts which lead to intermarriage while condemning the intermarriage itself.

This study measured the attitudes of a group of Jewish youth toward intermarriage by a method based oh the use of many questions and the computing for each individual of a score on a scale of favorableness and unfavorableness toward intermarriage. Fully 35 per cent of the students express a favorable attitude toward intermarriage; 43 per cent express a neutral attitude; only 22 per cent express an attitude in opposition to intermarriage. It is hard to evaluate these figures in isolation.
The Shulchan Aruch and its commentaries bring various opinions as to whether intermarriage is a Torah prohibition and when the prohibition is rabbinic. The Talmud holds that a marriage between a Jew and a non-Jew is both prohibited and also does not constitute a marriage under Jewish law. Furthermore, a Jewish man has no recognized paternal or parental relation to any offspring resulting from a relationship with a gentile woman. In my work covering dating for the Forward over the past two-and-a-half years, I have met hundreds and hundreds of people who are trying to find love with another Jewish person.
